The Barefoot Summer edition by Carolyn Brown Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I absolutely loved every single thing about this story, from the opening paragraph, to the very last written word. Carolyn Brown always has a way of bringing her characters alive so effortlessly, and this was no exception. Her characters are all very likable (even the quirkiest ones), and they are all so caring lovable and most of all believable. You'll laugh, cry, rant, swoon, and in the end you'll be rooting for them to succeed in finding their well deserved HEA's. Gracie who left me with smiles and laughter throughout this whole story. Ahhhh, if we could all just go back and start thinking like an innocent trusting child again. And Waylon, who was so patient and determined to clear the names of all 3 women and helped Kate learn to love again. Hattie and Victor were so cute together, even when they were bickering like children themselves, or meddling and matchmaking. But most of all; I loved the way these three women were able to take a very bad situation, and turn it into a family type relationship that just seemed to work for them all.
My biggest problem- as with all Carolyn Brown stories- is that they are so good that you never want the story to end. I started folling her over a decade ago when she first wrote the "Honky Tonk" series, and have read all of her books since then. I am happy to say that I have yet to be disappointed.
This book left me wishing everyone in turmoil could find a healing cabin and small town like the characters in this book found. Carolyn Brown brought the characters and the small town of bootleg to life. I found myself reading if only a page or two any chance I got.
I loved the characters and felt like I'd lost best friends when the book ended.
Kate who you felt her blossom from a prisoner of her mother and her career to a happy loving free woman. Amanda who seemed to be so lost at times to a responsible woman and mother. Jaime who always said it like it was, no sugar coating anything. Gracie who left me with smiles and laughter, and wishing she were a real child in my life to enjoy. Waylon who was so patient and determined to clear the names of all 3 women and helped Kate learn to love again. Hattie and Victor who were matchmaking throughout the story who never married but their characters felt like an elderly married couple.
I'm not into romance novels and was glad this was not too much romance but more of a story of 3 women who grew from a bad situation to learning what life really can be with a little faith, love, and working together to reach a common goal.
This was a well written book and I can't express enough how the author brought to life the entire story, which is a rare quality in writers in my opinion.
Well done Carolyn Brown and thank you for taking time to show your true writer qualities. This is the 1st book of yours I believe I've read but it won't be my last.
While the story itself was somewhat enjoyable albeit predictable, the awkward, childish writing and many inconsistencies were distracting. Ex Kate was on the deck then a few paragraphs later, she leaned back in bed. Or, she put the cooler in the back of the truck then did it again a few lines later. Annoying. Anyway, it's not a horrible book but it's not a page turner either.
First let me say that the female character development was written quite well. I felt I knew all three ladies quite well. After that, the story line was predictable by the 2nd chapter and the mystery of the murder of this husband of these three wasn't developed at all. The resolution to the murder was unbelievable and wasn't resolved until the very end of the book in only a few paragraphs. The characters that were involved in the murder weren't written about until almost the last chapter. Very unsatisfying.
The character, Waylon, was a detective and a cowboy. I found his school boy crush on the main character, Kate, out of character for his type of individual. Cowboys are rugged and to the point. This guy was mushy and more like a 20 year old girl in love than a seasoned detective, ranch hand, tough guy. Aside from the fact that it's well know among crime readers that the #1 no-no is to never get personally involved with a prime suspect during an investigation. By the 4th chapter, this guy was breaking every investigator rule in the book.
I kept reading and scanning the last half of the book thinking that a twist or a complication or something would happen to develop this story. Sadly, that did not happen. I found this author to have writing skills - but plot line was weak, at best, and romances were quite sappy. Not the type of thing you would expect from an oil baroness and a rugged cowboy.
The Barefoot Summer struck a cord in my heart, I laughed, loved and cried with these women and little Gracie.
I felt I was part of their lives and was so sorry when I reached the end and realized it was over and complete.
Katie rich and accomplished meets her husband's two other wives at his funeral, all thinking they are his legal wife. To remove herself from pain and pity Kate travels to the cabin where she and Conrad spent their honeymoon only to have the wives arrive also. Amanda the newest wife and very pregnant, Jamie married 7 years and the Mom of a delightful daughter Gracie create stress and unhappiness that changes to respect then like and then love. All three find true love in the tiny town that adopted them.
Sigh I love this story written by the extremely talented Carolyn Brown
I truly loved this book. It started out with three women who suspicious and untrusting of each other all over one skunk of a man. Well, two of them were. The other one could care less. In turns funny, and sad. It is well worth reading to get to the delightful ending.
Another hit for Carolyn Brown. Three women with different backgrounds come together with one common denominator, a very slick con man.
