New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett has written her most gripping and poignant tale yet. Provocatively heart-breaking, audaciously irreverent and romantically fulfilling, The Hard Truth About Sunshine exposes just how very thin the line is between a full life and an empty existence.
Despite having narrowly escaped death's clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It's only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life.
What could they possibly learn from one another? How could they possibly help each other to heal? And the question that Christopher asks himself over and over again... can he learn to love again?
He's about to find out as he embarks upon a cross country trip with a beautiful woman who is going blind, a boy with terminal cancer, and an abuse victim who can't decide whether she wants to live or die.
Four people with nothing in common but their destination. They will encounter adventure, thrills, loss and love. And within their travels they will learn the greatest lesson of all.
The hard truth about sunshine...
Warning This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

I just finished the last words of this sad, funny, tragic but unbelievably beautiful book and I'm speechless. Absolutely speechless! While this book is so very different from Sawyer's books to date, it is no less amazing than any other.I have to admit I was a little nervous going into this book, only because it is so different and as one can tell from the blurb, it's not going to be all sunshine (seriously had to) and rainbows. I had no reason to be nervous..at all! This book is beautiful, moving and thought provoking. And it is sweet to, there are some unbelievably moving moments that just make you smile and think about "things". I was especially moved by Sawyers explanation in her acknowledgements as to how this story came about.
I know I'm being extremely vague about a lot of things in this books but honestly...you have to experience it for yourself and you will know why. And in turn you will understand how amazing this book truly is!

The Hard Truth About Sunshine edition by Sawyer Bennett S Bennett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The Hard Truth About Sunshine by Sawyer Bennett is a standalone story of four very damaged individuals who meet in group therapy and the road trip they take that changes them all irrevocably. It both is and isn't a romance. There is an element but the friendship and healing is the strongest and most powerful part of the story. Told solely from the POV of Christopher Barlow, a wounded vet who is furiously angry and raging at the world, we get a more complete story as he goes from present day to past moments.
Beautifully written and such an emotionally engaging story it was definitely a change from the usual stories from one of my MUST-READ authors but, as she IS a MUST-READ author for me it was a no-brainer. When you want something more than than the steamy romance, fluffy love stories I HIGHLY recommend this story to you. Enjoy!
The Hard Truth About Sunshine is a book that I have been SO excited to read since before its release.
This book tells the story of four misfits from a support group who embark on a cross-country road trip to help a young boy live out his "bucket-list."
Each character has their own share of unimaginable hardships.
There's Christopher, a wounded veteran who is missing a leg and some of his fingers. He has no empathy for anyone else and has a very "woe is me" attitude (rightfully so) He is a self-proclaimed "jerk" and he honestly doesn't care to change that about himself. He only joins the support group because it is court-ordered. It's either that, or jail. Christopher starts out basically hating everyone in the group and is even envious of their conditions, believing they have it "easier" than he does. He often wishes he could trade places with Connor, thinking death would be the much better hand to be dealt. Christopher experiences suicidal thoughts at times, thinking ending it would be easier than living as what he believes is "half a man."
Barb is a suicidal woman who was sexually abused as a child by her uncle. He parents refused to believe her when she approached them about this and it played heavily into her depression. She is labeled as the "goth chick" by Christopher and is very closed off to the group. She prefers to be on her own and doesn't say much.
Connor is a teenager with terminal cancer. He has months to live and the road trip was really for him, although Christopher was able to get out of his support group sessions if he went along. Connor is sort of the glue that bonds the group together. Barb and Christopher aren't thrilled to be on this trip, but they play along for Connor's benefit.
Jillian is a young woman with a disease that is causing her to go blind. Although she has most of her sight during the duration of the novel, she will one day lose her sight and become legally blind. She also has a heart condition and could experience a heart attack if she exerts herself too much. Jillian is a ray of sunshine. Christopher even takes to calling her "sunshine." She is constantly optimistic, always encouraging the group to look on the bright side of things which is surprising to Christopher due to her disease. He doesn't believe that someone with her condition can be so happy and cheerful 24/7 and she slowly but surely gives him hope of his own.
This was a lovely novel that was as heartwarming as it was heartbreaking
If I could only use one word to describe this book, it would be bittersweet
I am a HUGE romance reader. Basically 100% of what I read is a romance or contains some sort of romance or love story. This book isn't necessarily a romance, although there is a romance/love story in it. If I am being honest, this book would have been just as spectacular without the romance. The bonds and friendships that were formed in this novel were so beautiful and important that I would not have missed the romance if it was not there. This story reminded me of the film The Breakfast Club which also deals with a group of four misfits. That kind of group, plus the road trip, made for an unforgettable and remarkable read
There were painful moments in this novel. The group knows that Connor is on limited time and although they all come to love and care about each other, they know they will soon have to face unbearable sadness. Sadness that they may not even be able to handle.
The character development was great, especially when it came to Christopher. At the beginning of the novel, he believes he is half a man. Unworthy. By the end of this book, he becomes someone strong, thoughtful, and caring. He undergoes a beautiful transformation, and I was so happy for him.
Each character will stick with you. I almost wish we could have gotten all of their POVs because I wanted to know more about who they were.
Five stars truly isn't enough for the powerful message that this book gives. Sawyer Bennett has touched on so many emotions that even hours after finishing I'm still overwhelmed with everything that has happened right from page one up until the Epilogue.
We meet four incredibly different people brought together for different reasons to try and find meaning.
There is Christopher Barlow a angry amputee, Jillian Martel a young woman coming to terms with losing her sight, Connor McCann a young man with terminal cancer and Barb Stiles a suicidal young woman.
What can happen when the four of them embark on a road trip. There will be many moments when you will hold your breath or a tear will run down your face but what you will feel when you see the words The End are every emotion that the four of them felt throughout their journey.
This was the most amazing book I've read in a long time. This book is about 4 people who are part of a therapy group. They all have different reasons for being there but in the end they all learn something wonderful from each other. There's Christopher whose a medically discharged marine suffering from loss. Loss of a leg and some fingers. Bard whose has some horrible things happen to her in her life and she isn't sure if she wants to live or die. Conner who has terminal cancer and Jillian who has a disease that will make her blind. They are all having problems dealing with their situation but the take out on a road trip to help Conner mark things off his bucket list before he dies and along the way they learn from each other and they all seem to mark things off their own bucket list.
I highly recommend this book. It's just wonderful!!!
I know you will love this book as much as I did!!
Happy reading!!
