Emma’s life is going down the tubes fast. She working to pay of her sister’s debt, by moonlighting as an exotic dancer, and trying to keep up appearances during the day as Brody Kanes’s drab, fashion challenged personal assistant. She tries so hard to leave her wild child, bad girl days behind her but it’s more difficult than she can imagine. Especially, when all she secretly wants is for her boss to bend her over her desk. That wish may be within her grasp when she finds herself on the giving end of the most awkward lap dance of her ill-fated stripping career.

Brody can’t stop lusting after the sensible, prim, seemingly uptight Emma. He finds himself fantasizing about her. His friends encourage him to scratch the itch but he’s got professional integrity. That integrity is punted straight out the window when he takes an important client to a strip club and gets the worst lap dance in the history of lap dances. From, none other than, Ms Strickland.

Initially, I was apprehensive because the writing seemed to be much of a muchness to every other romance novel out there but I was proven wrong rather quickly. Kate Meader has a great sense of humour and this comes across seamlessly in Emma and Brody’s story. This isn’t necessarily a laugh out loud story but her turn of phrase and quick quips, make the reading easy.

This Pretty Woman-esque story was a real page turner. The plot is not entirely original, but what plot is nowadays? It’s the execution that I am more concerned with. This could have been a standard modern damsel in distress romance, where she doesn’t want his money but he forces his help on her anyway, but somehow, this novel is more than that. Emma is whip sharp and her personality really blooms as the story progresses. Brody is broody with his heart really is in the right place and a few snappy one-liners of his own. My favourite character in the entire book is actually an auxiliary one. Katerina is a fellow dancer and tries, in her own dower eastern bloc way, to help Emma. I wish that there was an entire book about Katerina with her sass and dour delivery. Maybe Meader will do me a solid!

There are these little moments tucked away in the narrative, where the author seems to be mocking the romance genre. It’s very tongue in cheek, and harmless but I appreciated the sentiment and this story’s ability to laugh at itself. If you like a good boy meets girl, she gives a terrible lap dance, he falls even when he doesn’t want to, they have a falling out, his grand gesture doesn’t work kinda story, give this a go.

Taking the Score Tall Dark and Texan Book 2 edition by Kate Meader Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Brody Kane is an uptight, powerful, texas property tycoon who hires Emma Strickland as his assistant. Emma is a proud woman who has never depended on anyone and has taken care of her sister most of her life. It is that mothering instinct that has Emma in the sticky situation she is in. While trying to help her sister pay off her debts, Emma has been moonlighting as a waitress at a strip club. Brody decides to take an important client to a strip club and gets the worse lap dance from none other than Emma Strickland (I thought of Elaine's Seinfeld dance which made me laugh).

Brody is a man who wants to fix the situation by simply paying off the debt but knows Emma won't take the money. Can he help her? Will she let him? Thrown into the mix is Emma's temperamental cat who Brody must befriend to get closer to Emma.

Taking the Score has lots of hot scenes between Emma and Brody (and one in which they are not even in the same room together) and a great story line as well. I highly recommend this book. I am really looking forward to Book 3.
Not all romance stories are for all people. Sometimes I think a review is directly related to what mood I'm in or how accepting I am of the plot. I dunno. Maybe not. But I liked this story and cannot understand how it can be rated anything less than 3 or 4★'s. Even though it's not original, this author made it her own...making it cute and sometimes funny. It was fast paced without losing the connection to these two wonderful protagonists. It was an intriguing romance with strong undercurrents of blackmail.

I liked 25 y/o Emma Strickland. She's more mature than her years. She's not just intelligent, she's smart and Ms. Meader describes her with fine precision. I felt Emma's desolate desperation and hopelessness. I loved this premise of how Emma leads a double life, putting her dreams "on hold" working in a gentleman club. She's a frumpy, plain, no nonsense "Ms. Strickland" by day...a P.A. to her stuffy, straight laced boss (whom she harbors a strong attraction to and he to her..). Neither of them realize this. Anyway, at night, she's a wild siren...a sex kitten. She takes this second, less savory job to make extra money...to bail her younger sister out of debt.

I equally loved Broderick (Brody) Kane III and his two ornery sidekick pals. He's a decent kind of guy with kinky tastes/needs. He's healing from a broken engagement and even though it's been 6 months, he's still not dating. But while taking an important client clubbing, he...you know, ends up at Emma's second place of employment by night. And holy whoa...Ms. Meader so expertly describes the shock, amazement, confusion and disbelief that Brody experiences upon seeing his dowdy P.A. dressed like a stripper. It's a shocking but funny moment. Then anger and finally lust comes roaring to the front.

Like I said...this story isn't original. It's been told before. But Ms. Meader gave it just enough erotic sex play without overpowering the plot. I loved how the very person who keeps Brody's structured, ordered life well oiled and humming nicely, becomes the same person to cause it all to unravel. It was great and I'd highly recommend reading it.
