The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors Drew Daywalt Adam Rex Books

My five-year-old grandson loves this book. I ordered it after seeing it recommended for 4-7 year-olds and was pleased with the result. My grandson did not know the game, so I taught it to him before reading him the book (yes, he wanted to wait to see what I chose, so that he could win!). The made-up legend is presented as an origin story for three great heroes: Rock, Paper, and Scissors. I would recommend reading it as if you were announcing professional wrestling--i.e., just match your voice and intonation to the print size and you should be fine. Read in a normal, quiet, reading voice and it would be a bit of a snore. But "ROCK IS VICTORIOUS" read with excitement and a wee bit of volume brings giggles.

What also brings giggles are words like "underpants"--just saying the word is likely to get any four or five year-year-old dissolving into shocked laughter. My grandson also adopted Paper's watch phrase, "Wait. What!?" Which then allowed his mother and I to explain what a "private joke" was.

If you're looking for lessons-to-be-learned, you'll have to work hard. Here are a few you could derive from the text:
1. Winning all the time stops being fun if you don't have a challenger equal to your skills.
2. Different people have different skills where they excel (Rock wins on pure strength, Paper by cleverness, Scissors with her unexpected snipping action).
3. Competition does not have to be angry--after Rock, Paper, and Scissors finally get together the continue a "glorious" and "joyous" competition because they finally have a chance of losing.

But, I had to work hard to pull those out, and it would probably ruin the experience to pull out morals.

"The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors" might be low on lessons learned, but it is high on delight.

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors Drew Daywalt Adam Rex Books Reviews

Whenever students in my classroom have a disagreement or a problem with sharing, we use Rock, Paper, Scissors to problem-solve. I saw this book and bought it without even peeking inside. I'm so glad I did because students LOVED it and begged for me to read it again! It's told like a wrestling battle, "Let's get ready to R-U-M-B-L-E!!!!!" The way the author describes the setting and characters will have kids belly-laughing (and adults, too).
Awesome book to be read using different voices. "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?" asks the Rock. Fun to say to my 5 year old like I'm a professional wrestler straining my voice. Even though we don't watch wrasslin' - I grew up with the 4 horsemen and Rick Flair's wooo!! - so it helps me read the book like there's a match going on. Great book. Better than I expected.
Every child should read this book. Every parent will truly enjoy reading this book with their children. Seriously creative. We were entertained!!
My daughter mentioned this book after school one day then again a couple weeks later and tried to recite the whole book from memory to her brother so I decided to buy it. We read it together at bedtime last night and we were ALL (me too) laughing hysterically! We finished the evening have rock, paper, scissors battles. It was so much fun. My kids are F7 M3.5 M2. I highly recommend this book!
I dont usually go out of my way to review a product....but this book is just so fantastic! I love this author and the pictures are great. Anyone who would give this book less than 5 stars has no personality! A must buy for all kids! I will be buying more to give as gifts!
I'm a Pre-K through 5th grade librarian. This book is awesome! The older kids especially like it, but even my Pre-K kids know what rock-paper-scissors is a non-confrontational way of resolving a dispute. This is a wonderful read-aloud!
I do not understand why the reviews are so good. I wish I had read the lower star reviews before purchasing as it’s $6 to return. I would not even give this book as a gift! I do not like the language in this book and I get aggression, name calling and winning at the cost of squashing others as the most recognizable messages. Definitely not appropriate for my 4.5 and 6 yo kids. I recommend checking this book out cover to cover in the library or store first before purchasing.
